Getting older is inevitable and many have to change their living arrangements. Some retirees are moving into a smaller place, others moved to warmer climate or have changed the layout of their home to accomidate their change in life style.

Is anyone here making plans of what to do when you retire? Will you move closer to your kids or move into a retirement community? For some, it's a hard decision to make. What are your thoughts on this?

When I retire, I would like to live closer to my daughter and grand children. Currently they live in Atlanta, but that could change if my daughter's husband is transferred to a new job in another state. Hopefully they will continue to stay where the weather is warm and sunny.

I currently live in the north east and I'm tired of the long, cold, winter months that never seem to end. I would consider moving to a retirement community, but I like my privacy and I think there are some seniors that are more nosy than others. For that reason, I would like to stay in my home in a secluded area with very few neighbors. That's my plan.

I have made my choice, and it has been a long time in the making. OK, so I’m a pretty “let’s find out” kind of person. I knew what I was, what I wanted, and all I had to do was find out what place might have all those things.

I like warm. I do not like cold. I like to have convenience without crowds. I don’t see any reason to live where there isn’t enough water or power or natural gas. I can’t imagine moving into another area where real estate is a hobby instead of a sound investment. I would prefer not to deal with crazy hurricanes, earthquakes or tornadoes. So where is this place? I’m seriously not going to tell you. I’ve done that before; found the perfect restaurant or perfect store and blabbed my mouth off to everybody. Then within a year, I can’t get a table at the restaurant, or the store becomes too “chic” for words and the prices go through the roof. I will describe the area, though.

It is a medium sized city, not a town. It has mostly sunny skies, with four real seasons, an emphasis on warm. There is a natural river (not some concrete lined imitation) and the weather is pretty predictable. Rain falls in the river bed. Mountains block massive storms. It is on the major pipelines for natural gas. There is an airport that is not too crowded. The military has land in the area (that speaks of continuity of utilities and road access). The state government is run by a fairly moderate Democrat. The land is earthquake resistant. There are no massive tourist attractions and no coastline. Real Estate has been almost flat for 20 years. I can’t wait.

Hi Dackerson!

I read your post and I keep trying to figure out the place you are talking about because it sounds like the perfect place to live! At first I thought of Louisiana, but there are no mountains that I know of. Hmmmm... I don't think it's Texas cause that's a big state and the temperature is always warm there. It can't be Florida cause they have hurricane season. Nor can it be California cause they always have the threat of earthquakes. So where is this place????

I currently live in the north east near the great lakes and I am sick and tired of the cold snowy weather. Just the other day we got 10 inches of snow and we're suppose to get another 10 inches tomorrow! I wish I could retire today, because I am ready to move to a much warmer climate where I no longer have to shovel snow or scrap the snow off my car windshield in the morning hours.

I was thinking of possibly moving to South Carolina or Georgia. Some people want to move to Florida, but they have too many hurricanes and I'm not used to them. I would be too scared of losing my house every time there was a threat of a hurricane approaching. Basically, I wan to live any where near the warm sun!

I won’t live where there is a lawn. If there is one, I’ll tear it out and put in native plants. Preferably, there will be a private garden at the rear of the house where I can relax and extend my living space to the outdoors. I really don’t think I am friendly enough to have people living just 6 inches from my bedroom, so a condo is out. It’s got to be a private residence. A duplex is as far as I will budge on that one. There should be a garage, because my car or small truck is going to be parked there most of the time. I’m going to bicycle as long as my legs work, then I’m getting in my golf cart or powered wheel chair to go to the store. So there had better be bike paths or wheelchair ramps everywhere.

I would really like to be able to ride my bike to the place where I volunteer. That isn’t a high priority, because if there isn’t a volunteer service, I’ll just start one. No community has enough of them. There had better be a good way to get high speed internet. It would be crazy to take such a big step backward at this point in the twenty-first century. I’ve lived for too long in a place where I don’t even have cell phone reception, and DSL is not ( I repeat, NOT ) available. I might as well live in an igloo on the tundra somewhere. I really want a lot of crabby old people like me around. Front yards will be respected as private property. Police won’t be looking for gangs in the neighborhood because we won’t tolerate “live and let live” that far. We’ll have our nose in your business if your business is in the street. I want to be able to know that my neighbors will know my name and my preferences. If I turn out to be a late sleeper, I want them to warn me of early morning construction so I can get some earplugs. If there is going to be a loud party, I want to be invited so I can politely decline and turn up the TV. I don’t think that is too much to ask, do you?

After my retirement I would like to live with my wife in the city outskirts away from the hustle and bustle of the city life. Well I would definitely appreciate my grandchildren visiting us once in a month or so.

Williamsburg, VA. Love it there. Winters are not bad, lots to do and lots of history.

In my opinion, it is good idea, if I live in a simple place like province.
