Post subject: Where can I look for an apartment? Posted: Wed Jun 18, 2008 3:13 pm |

Many people will advertise their apartment for rent in the newspaper, but usually many of the good apartments are already rented out before I get a chance to see them. Is there any other place that landlords advertise their apartment? So far I've been talking to people at my church hoping they might know someone who has a nice place for rent. Any other suggestions on where to look would be greatly appreciated.

Many landlords like to advertise their apartment in areas that attract a certain group of people. One of the places to look for an apartment is the colleges. Many colleges have a department that provides students with information on apartments that are for rent in the area. Where I live, my local college has several books that list apartments that are for rent along with details of the apartment such as the number of rooms, what's included with the rent, whether there is a lease to sign, and if there are any restrictions. I was amazed at the selection of apartments that were available. It seems that landlords who are interested in renting their apartments to students have a great place to advertise.

Where I live there are some small local newspapers that advertise apartments for rent. Most of the landlords tend to advertise in these newspapers because people in the suburbs receive them. Hence, landlords feel they get a better clientèle when they advertise in the suburbs.
In addition, you may also want to look online for apartments. Some people have gone to craigslist to view apartments that are available in their area. One of the advantages of looking at apartments on line is you can sometimes see pictures of the apartment to determine if this is the right one for you. I suggest you try it. It can be fun and it's less time consuming.

Some of the most popular places many landlords advertise is the newspaper. Of course, landlords prefer to advertise where they can get a certain type of tenant. This is their way of screening a tenant rather than opening up the rental apartment to everyone. For example, if you want a student as a tenant, you'll advertise at the colleges.
I have noticed that some landlords will advertise their apartment by putting a sign in the window or on the front lawn stating that there is an apartment for rent. Others will use word of mouth to get someone who they are familiar with, such as a neighbor's aunt or someone at work has a friend that is looking for a place.

I found my apartment from a friend at work who knew someone in her family who was renting an apartment. I was a bit hesitant at first because I was not familiar with the area, but when I saw the apartment, it was exactly what I was looking for. The only problem was the price. They were asking a bit higher than what I could afford, but since they liked me they were willing to negotiate a lower rental price that fit my budget. Today I am still living in my rented apartment and so far I am very happy here.

Hi jadugar,
Your lucky that the landlord was willing to negotiate a rental price that you can afford. I've never heard of that happening. Most of the time landlords are interested in getting as much money from their tenant as possible.
I found my apartment at my local library. They have a bulletin board for people in the community to post. The apartment was posted with photo pictures showing the inside of the apartment. It looked like a nice place so I called the phone number, met with the landlord and eventually took the place. Sometimes you find apartments in the least likely place.
