Recently there has been a surge of environmental awareness in business, political, and social circles. Many Realtors are making the preservation of our environment and natural resources as it pertains to real estate a top priority.
Here in Sarasota, our local association has formed the Green Realtors Alliance and Green Business Partnership (initiated with a grant by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection). Both will be hosting the first annual Green Homes Expo in April.
Is anyone else actively involved in the Green Movement? Has your association(s) begun their own initiatives? Please share any ideas or information in this forum.

I think owning a home that is environmentally friendly is a great asset to the community and an excellent selling point to homeowners who are interested in purchasing a home. I know a home located near my house that is owned by a professor at the university. He spent several years making his home environmentally friendly and he has found many people who are interested in incorporating the same ideas into their home. Right now he is well known for converting his home to solar power. One of the advantages of going solar power is getting state and federal government rebates and credit from surplus energy returned to the regional utility grid. With saving like this, many people want to follow his lead.

I think having a home that is environmentally friendly is a great selling point. There are several houses on the market and if your house has a special feature such as solar panels or if you install a geothermal heating and cooling system your house becomes more marketable. In addition, you may want to consider purchasing appliances that save energy and your electric bills will be greatly reduced.
I'm considering purchasing a new refrigerator this summer. One of my requirements is purchasing one that is an energy star appliance because it uses 10–50% less energy than standard models. In addition, I've been told that I can save an average of $80 a year in energy costs. That's good news to me because I live on a strict budget and I need to save as much money as possible in my growing family.

The green movement seems to have become very popular, especially with the rise in gas prices. people seem to be looking for any possible avenue to cut prices and use natural energy. Even Oprah Winfrey had an entire show dedicated to saving the planet and what people can do to "go green". One of the most popular is the plastic bottles because they generates large amounts of container waste. In addition, people are starting to use tap water instead of bottled water because it's cheaper and it could be safer for you. I already use a water filter to purify tap water.
