Post subject: How to get out of a lease? Posted: Tue Aug 19, 2008 11:03 am |

I have an apartment and I signed a one year lease about 6 months ago. I have been looking for a new job and was recently hired at a job that is located 60 miles away. Hence, I need to move, but my concern is the lease that I signed. I need to break the lease and I'm hoping this can be done without any legal problems. Does anyone here have any advice or personal experience on leases. What can I expect when I go to my landlord and tell him that I need to move because of my job? Will he be understanding or give me a hard time?

If you have a lease, especially a years lease, you will have a difficult time getting out of the lease. However, If you had a month to month, you would simply give them 30 days notice at the beginning of a month, and move out after the 30 days.
Since you have a year lease, usually in the lease it states that you have to pay a penalty for early termination. You need to read your lease to determine what it states about terminating early. I have found that many landlords are not sympathetic about anything pertaining to your personal life. They are only interested in the money that is due to them.
