Post subject: How to file a homeowners claim? Posted: Mon Oct 08, 2007 5:14 pm |

I am the type of person who wants to be ready for any possible situation that comes my way. For this reason, I want to know all the information that is necessary if something was to happen on my property which causes me to file a homeowners claim. If someone was to become injured or if a violent storm destroys my home, I want to know in advance what I need to do. Usually when disaster strikes no one is in the proper mind set to know what they need to do. So far, I realize there are rules and procedures that I must follow. One such rule is to get a police report if my home was robed or vandalized along with the names of the law enforcement officers that I speak with. What other information do I need when filing a claim? Any suggestions?

One of the fist things you need to do when filing a claim is to phone your agent immediately. Insurance companies place a time limit on filing claims so do it as soon as possible. You are also going to need to demonstrate your loss so avoid throwing out any damaged items until the adjuster has visited your home. I also strongly recommend photographing or videotaping the damaged itmes. You should prepare a home inventory of all damaged itmes, make a copy for your adjuster and supply him or her with copies of receipts you originally paid for your goods. Finally keep a record of all expenses incurred form the damages. You may be eligible for a refund for being inconvenienced.
