I was looking at an apartment the other day and I had to inform them of my previous landlord's address along with his phone number. I told the person I didn't have the phone number and would have to send it to him later. I must admit that I was a little thrown back that he actually wanted my previous landlord's phone number. I never had someone ask for my previous landlord's information before. Is this something new? Do landlords really call your previous landlord or are they simply trying to intimidate you?

If a landlord wants to make sure he wont have any problems with a new tenant, he will definitely call the previous landlord. This is a normal procedure that gives the new landlord peace of mind that you will be a good tenant and not give him any problems. I recommend all landlords to follow this tactic. In addition, they may ask; How long your rented from them? What condition was the apartment when you left? Did you pay your rent on time? Would you have them again as a tenant?

You may want to inform your previous landlord that they might be receiving a phone call from the new landlord. This is a good way to prepaid your landlord so they can give a good recommendation.

You better believe they talk. Especially if you are moving from one area to a local area nearby. I am sure you have heard that saying" don't burn any bridges". Well this saying holds very true in the rental business. No one wants to get stuck with a bad tenant.
