After buying a house, my husband and I were still responsible for the last 2 months rent of our apartment due to a lease, unless we could find a tenant. About 10 days after we moved out, a friend discovered that someone else was already living there, eventhough we were still paying rent. What can we do? Who do we talk to?

Florida law says that an owner is not allowed to collect "Double Rent" meaning rent from two sources for the same period on the same property.
Look up the statute and send a letter to the apartment threatening to go to an attorney if they do not correct this. They may state that rather than taking your money as "Rent", they are charging you a lease break fee. If so, this too is illegal according to my attorney. They can only charge you for provable losses. Speak with an attorney.
