A significantly better method than getmail is available here; worth checking out: http://www.thamtech.com/blog/2008/03/29/gmail-to-google-apps-email-migration/

Worked virtually flawlessly for me. Several messages had to be copied manually due to odd SSL errors, and Gmail's poor IMAP implementation meant that lots of warnings are seen.

I was really hoping this article would tackle deciphering gmail IMAP labels with getmail... I have my gmail setup with about 30 labels that change periodically. According to this tutorial and every other imap backup tutorial I've seen, this requires 30 entires in the "mailboxes = { }" attribute. Though this is a pain in the butt, it's not a huge problem. The issue though is what happens when I move directories, or create a new one? Perhaps a php script that rewrites the getmailrc is the only way to go...

Hi Muralidhar,

I've updated the post to include the list find function. I have a library of functions that work with lists so I don't have to constantly implode/explode lists. If you are interested in the library, I can send that off to you.

Hi !

Thanks for your article !

Maybe you should use strripos and strpos functions in the extractText function, because sometimes, mails are not with "Date:" but with "date:"
